Associate Director - Transport Planning
Location: Fareham, Hampshire
Hours: Monday-Friday, 08:30-17:00
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience

A well-established and growing transport planning consultancy is looking to appoint an Associate Transport Planner to join their Fareham-based team. As a senior member of the Southern Transport Planning team, you'll take a leading role in delivering a varied mix of projects, from smaller sites through to major developments, while helping to shape the future growth of the business. You'll combine technical expertise with project leadership, client management, and mentoring responsibilities within a supportive, family‑friendly environment.

You'll work closely with a multidisciplinary team of Transport Planners, Civil Engineers and Structural Engineers, providing high‑quality transport planning advice across residential, commercial, industrial and mixed‑use schemes. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Senior/Principal Transport Planner ready to step into a more strategic role with greater autonomy and responsibility.

The Role

  • Lead and manage a portfolio of transport planning projects, ensuring delivery to agreed timescales, budgets and technical standards.

  • Oversee the preparation and review of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, Technical Notes and supporting planning reports.

  • Provide strategic transport advice to clients, helping to shape access strategies, parking proposals and sustainable transport solutions for development sites.

  • Review and sign off technical work produced by the team, ensuring quality, consistency and compliance with national and local guidance.

  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, developers and other stakeholders, representing the consultancy at meetings, public consultation events and design workshops.

  • Use and oversee the application of transport modelling and assessment tools (e.g. TRICS, junction modelling) to evaluate trip generation, distribution and network impacts.

  • Lead on planning appeal work where required, including preparation and coordination of transport evidence.

  • Contribute to business development through fee proposals, tender submissions and strengthening existing client relationships.

  • Manage, mentor and train junior and mid‑level transport planners, supporting their technical development and progression.

About You

  • Degree‑qualified in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography or a related discipline.

  • Around 10+ years' experience in transport planning, ideally within a consultancy environment.

  • Strong knowledge of UK planning and transport policy, national design guidance and local authority requirements.

  • Proven track record of leading projects, managing budgets and delivering high‑quality technical outputs.

  • Confident in providing strategic advice to clients and leading discussions with Local Highway Authorities.

  • Experience managing and training junior members of staff, with a collaborative and supportive leadership style.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly.

  • Proactive, commercially aware and comfortable contributing to work‑winning and client development activities.

What's on Offer

  • Competitive salary based on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

  • Senior‑level role with genuine scope to influence projects and the wider transport planning service.

  • Opportunity to work on a wide variety of schemes, from small local developments to large, complex projects.

  • Clear progression pathway within a growing, technically focused consultancy.

  • Support for ongoing professional development and membership of relevant professional institutions.

  • Friendly, collaborative working environment with a strong focus on work‑life balance.
