Manpower is recruiting on behalf of a leading consultancy for an experienced Principal Transport Planner to join a growing and dynamic team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated transport planning professional looking to take the lead on high-profile projects, manage client relationships, and play a key role in business growth and team development.

About the Role

As a Principal Transport Planner, you will be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of transport planning projects from inception through to completion. You will provide technical leadership, develop client relationships, support business development activities, and mentor junior team members while ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project manage transport planning schemes, including budget control and programme management.
  • Prepare, review and approve technical reports, including:
    • Transport Assessments
    • Transport Statements
    • Travel Plans
    • Technical Notes
  • Undertake and oversee trip generation and distribution assessments using relevant modelling methodologies and software packages.
  • Support the preparation and approval of technical drawings where required.
  • Prepare appeal documentation, including Statements of Case, Statements of Common Ground and Proofs of Evidence.
  • Attend appeal hearings and public inquiries as an Expert Witness.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor.
  • Prepare, review and issue fee proposals and tender submissions.
  • Identify and engage in business development opportunities, including networking and industry events.
  • Assist with the development of team strategies and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Train, mentor and support the professional development of junior team members.
  • Undertake line management responsibilities, including performance reviews and appraisals.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Essential Requirements

  • Degree-level qualification in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience within transport planning.
  • Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of transport planning principles and methodologies.
  • Comprehensive understanding and application of national transport and design guidance.
  • Proven ability to manage workloads, prioritise effectively, and delegate tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound professional judgements.
  • Excellent report writing, communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management experience.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience acting as an Expert Witness.
  • Experience managing and developing teams.
  • Demonstrable success in business development and winning new work.
