We are recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician (Electrical Bias) to join their Estates & Facilities team. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a large and diverse academic and residential estate, delivering high-quality planned and reactive maintenance services while supporting the safe and efficient operation of university facilities.

This role would suit a skilled electrical maintenance engineer or craftsperson looking for a varied position within a stable, well-structured environment that offers long-term career prospects and ongoing professional development.

Key Responsibilities

As part of the Estates & Facilities team, you will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive electrical repairs across a varied estate.

  • Maintaining and repairing a wide range of electrical building services, including lighting, power distribution, HVAC electrical supplies, fire alarm systems and building management systems.

  • Undertaking minor electrical installation, alteration and improvement works across both modern and listed buildings.

  • Diagnosing faults using a range of testing methods and the Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to identify and resolve issues efficiently.

  • Producing electrical inspection and testing certificates in accordance with current legislation and industry standards, including NAPIT requirements.

  • Safely isolating electrical services, issuing isolation certificates and Permits to Work, and reinstating systems following maintenance activities.

  • Managing your own workload effectively while maintaining excellent customer service standards.

  • Providing guidance and supervision to Maintenance Assistants, Apprentices and other colleagues where required.

  • Maintaining accurate records using the organisation's maintenance management system (currently PlanOn and future digital platforms), ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures and agreed service levels.

  • Participating in an out-of-hours on-call rota to support a 24/7/365 maintenance service across the estate. An additional £160 on-call allowance is payable for each rota period.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • City & Guilds Electrical Craft Certificate or NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering Maintenance or a related discipline.

  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671).

  • City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification (or equivalent).

  • A full UK driving licence.

  • Proven experience in fault-finding, maintenance and repair of electrical building services and associated systems.

  • A proactive, reliable and customer-focused approach with a strong commitment to health and safety.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, a willingness to learn and the flexibility to work across a varied estate.

Desirable Skills & Experience

The following would be advantageous but are not essential:

  • Additional Level 3 qualifications covering a broader range of electrical disciplines.

  • Membership of NAPIT.

  • Basic mechanical maintenance knowledge to support minor associated mechanical works.

  • Good IT skills and experience using computerised maintenance management systems.

Ideal Background

We welcome applications from candidates with experience across a variety of sectors. Individuals from Higher Education, the Armed Forces, NHS, Local Government, FM providers or the wider Public Sector often transition particularly well into this environment due to the similarities in compliance, procedures and operational standards.

We also encourage applications from candidates who may have slightly less experience but demonstrate strong core electrical skills, a positive attitude and a genuine commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to join a well-established Estates & Facilities team working across a diverse and interesting portfolio of buildings. You'll benefit from:
