Overview
We are seeking an experienced and BOAS-trained Boiler Engineer to provide temporary engineering support across a research centre and associated campus buildings in Glasgow. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, testing, and maintenance support of steam boiler systems, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and site operating procedures.
This role requires a competent engineer with practical experience in steam generation systems, boiler house operations, and routine testing activities essential for the safe and efficient operation of plant and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor steam boilers and associated plant equipment.
- Carry out daily boiler blowdowns in accordance with site procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
- Undertake weekly evaporation tests and record results accurately.
- Perform routine boiler water quality checks and liaise with water treatment specialists where required.
- Monitor boiler performance, pressure, temperature, and water levels to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Complete all operational logbooks, testing records, and compliance documentation.
- Identify and report plant faults, defects, or abnormal operating conditions.
- Support planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities on steam generation equipment.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and statutory regulations.
- Work closely with facilities and maintenance teams to minimise disruption to research activities.
- Participate in emergency call-out or response activities if required.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Current BOAS (Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme) qualification.
- Proven experience operating and maintaining steam boiler systems.
- Knowledge of boiler water treatment requirements and testing procedures.
- Experience carrying out:
- Daily blowdowns.
- Weekly evaporation tests.
- Routine operational inspections.
- Understanding of steam systems, pressure systems, and associated safety requirements.
- Ability to read and complete technical records and compliance documentation.
- Strong awareness of health and safety practices within critical facilities environments.
Desirable Qualifications
- City & Guilds, NVQ, or equivalent engineering qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, or a related discipline.
- Experience working within hospitality, healthcare, higher education, or critical infrastructure environments.
- Knowledge of Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR).
- IOSH Working Safely or equivalent health and safety certification.

Duration
